They don't know what "Satin" means
To a client, "Satin" is a fabric, not a paint finish. When you ask them what sheen they want, they freeze. This delays your paint order and stalls the job.
Stop asking them open-ended questions. Prescribe the solution.
The Room-by-Room Matrix
Use this logic to make the decision for them.
Living / Bedrooms
Or "Low Luster"
Why: Hides drywall imperfections. Looks velvety and premium. Does not reflect glare from windows.
Bath / Kitchen
Or "Pearl"
Why: Moisture resistance. Condensation sits on top instead of soaking in. Easy to wipe toothpaste/grease off.
Trim / Doors / Cabinets
Most Durable
Why: Maximum hardness. Stands up to kicks, vacuums, and fingernails. Contrast nicely with matte walls.
The Simple Explanation Script
"Think of it like a slider. On one side is 'Looks Great' (Flat), on the other side is 'Easy to Wash' (Gloss). For your living room, we want it to look great, so we go Flat. For your bathroom, we need to wash it, so we go Satin."
