If you can't beat their price, beat their legitimacy.
You are bidding $5,000 against a "guy with a truck" bidding $2,800. You cannot explain that price gap with just quality talk. You need to explain the *risk*.
Don't badmouth the competitor. Instead, empower the homeowner to badmouth them for you. Give them this "Vetting Checklist" at the end of your estimate.
"I encourage you to get other quotes. When you do, just make sure to ask these 5 questions to protect your home. If they can't answer them, be very careful."
Q1: "Can I get a COI directly from your agent?"
The Trap: Many bad contractors photoshop old insurance certificates.
The Correct Answer: A legitimate pro will say "Sure, I'll have my agent email you a certificate with your name on it globally holder today." The trunk slammer will say "Uh, I have a copy in my truck..."
Q2: "Are your workers employees or subcontractors?"
The Trap: Misclassification.
The Risk: If they use "subs" but treat them like employees (provide tools, set hours), and one gets hurt, the state can come after the homeowner for unpaid Workers Comp premiums.
Q3: "Will you sign a Lien Waiver?"
The Trap: The contractor doesn't pay the paint store. The paint store places a lien on the homeowner's house.
The Power Move: Offering a signed "Release of Liens" upon final payment separates you from 99% of residential painters. It sound ultra-professional and makes clients feel incredibly safe.
